Goomboora Park for Dogs

Goomboora Park for Dogs

It’s no secret that we are always on the lookout for the best pet-friendly places to take your dog (or cat) and that includes parks too.

So, on a recent trip to Cairns, when our friend invited us to visit “Cairns best place to walk the dog” we jumped at the chance.

Goomboora Park is set in a beautiful natural landscape with wide open spaces for dogs to run free and a shady forested area next to a creek, ideal for cooling off during those humid summer days.

Local resident, Nicky Ward, loves to take her dogs Flicker and Nash to this park, she says, “I try and take them there about twice a week because they love it and have a ball chasing other dogs around and swimming in the creek.”

Of course, being in the tropics means you’ll need to protect yourself against mozzies – they love it here! We got covered in bites because we didn’t bring repellent so don’t make the same mistake as us.

This park has a designated off-leash area for dogs, and while dogs are welcome to most areas of the park, they are not permitted in the playground.

In recent years, there’s been some discussion among local non-dog owners about people not picking up after their dogs and dogs who are not under proper control, they have even considered petitioning the council to prohibit dogs in the park – always be mindful that not everyone is dog-friendly when visiting parks to avoid any unnecessary tensions.

Goomboora is a well-equipped park with a range of facilities that include a BBQ, bike trails, a children’s rope course, drinking water, picnic areas, toilets, a walking track and ample parking.

The park gets packed on weekends so arrive early to reserve the best shady spots if you are planning to spend the day there, alternatively just turn up and go for a walk by the creek and let your dog roam free in the great outdoors.
